Common types of Intellectual Property - the Artistic Design
There are a number of artistic works which are never meant to be applied industrially. Collectively we refer to these as artistic designs or works.
Common examples include:
- paintings and drawings;
- architectural and engineering drawings (which might later become industrial designs);
- music and sound recordings, music scores, etc;
- written works, including song lyrics, poems, written articles, plays, movie scripts, books, and other
literary works;
- sculptures and models;
- images, photographic images, cinematic movies, video clips, and other visual works;
- dramatic and choreographic works;
Original artistic works are generally protectable by copyright. It must be an original work - not copied or significantly copied from another - and protection typically goes to the author unless another form of agreement or legal transfer of rights is already in place.
In some countries, such as New Zealand, copyright is automatic. In other countries, such as the US, provisions additionally exist to register the copyright with their Patent Office.

True artistic works tend to be associated with the Arts, and original works created in these fields.
Copyright is the traditional form of protection for these works. This is automatic (not requiring formal registration) in most countries, though some countries also allow for registration of certain copyright works.
